Foods to Avoid While Breastfeeding

A successful newborn session in our studio revolves around baby being very sleepy and relaxed for as much of the session as possible. He or she will likely be extra hungry and want to feed more often, and ideally they will be completely satiated and "milk drunk."

Unfortunately some newborn babies are gassy, fussy, and suffer from issues with digestion that can make the first weeks or months of their life unpleasant. This can cause difficulty getting the quality sleep they need. If you or your partner plan to breastfeed then a sometimes overlooked aspect of success is the mother's nutrition. There are a number of foods that when consumed by mom are transferred to breastmilk and can result in digestive reactions. Some flavours can seep breastmilk as well, and if the baby does not like that flavour it can be a turn off. A hungry baby is an unhappy baby. If you are seeing any signs of discomfort, gas, excess burping, or excess vomiting, avoiding certain foods and sticking to a bland diet for a while (6-8 weeks) may help to create relief.

Breastfeeding Food Guide

The following list is a helpful guide of common foods to avoid while nursing. These foods typically affect babies under 6 weeks. As they get older, introduce foods one at a time to see how they are affected. Every baby is different, so be sure to consult with your Pediatrician.

Acidic & Spicy Food such as:

taco rice
  1. Cranberries
  2. Pineapple
  3. Grapefruit
  4. Oranges
  5. Lemons
  6. Strawberries
  7. All Berries
  8. Tomatoes or Tomato products
  9. Ketchup
  10. Pizza
  11. Chili
  12. Mexican Food
  13. Other ethnic/spicy foods
  14. Chocolate (rarely affects babies)
  15. Peanuts & nuts in general
  16. Garlic

Restrict Beverages such as:

  1. Soda
  2. Coffee
  3. Tea
  4. Wine
  5. Beer

Gassy Vegetables Such As:

  1. Asparagus
  2. Onions
  3. Cucumbers/Pickles
  4. Broccoli
  5. Cauliflower
  6. Brussels Sprouts
  7. Cabbage

Other known offenders:

  1. Wheat
  2. Dairy

We especially recommend if your baby is gassy that you avoid the above foods for at least 48 hours before your session. This will ensure baby is happier, sleepier, and we get the best results from your session.
